NEW YORK (Thursday, January 9, 2025) – MLS NEXT has announced the launch of a new competition tier starting in September 2025. This expansion will increase the number of clubs in MLS NEXT, including Long Island SC, and offer new opportunities for aspiring players across North America. The new tier will feature regular season games, regional tournaments, national events, coaching development, and talent identification programs.
MLS NEXT, currently with 151 clubs and over 16,000 players, is the elite platform for youth soccer development. The expansion will provide greater flexibility for member clubs, allowing for optimized team travel, scheduling, and resource allocation, all while raising the level of competition across the U.S. and Canada. The expanded tier will also feature regional tournaments serving as qualifiers for the MLS NEXT Cup championship event in 2026.
This growth reflects MLS NEXT’s commitment to developing the next generation of talent, with clubs like Long Island SC playing a key role. The expanded program will allow players to compete in marquee talent identification events, with scouts from colleges, professional clubs, and national teams in attendance. Players in the new tier will also be eligible to play high school soccer.

Clubs interested in applying for the new tier of competition within MLS NEXT can begin applying now for the Fall 2025 season.
